FASHION CAT FIGHT #2: Karl Lagerfeld vs. Meryl Streep

Who would have thought? 2 of the biggest names in the world are at odds! Karl Lagerfeld, a fashion icon, who is the creative director for both Chanel & Fendi had a recent run-in with Meryl Streep, errrr – possibly the biggest name in Hollywood? Awks… how can two powerful people humiliate each other like that? Anyway, let’s get to the story.

Karl recently told Women’s Wear Daily that Meryl had allegedly requested a gown from Chanel but decided to change her mind once they refused to pay her to wear the dress too. “I made a sketch, and we started to make the dress,” Lagerfeld told WWD. Later, someone from Streep’s team told Lagerfeld not to “continue the dress,” because they “found somebody who will pay us.”

Lagerfeld goes on to say “after we gift her a dress that’s 100,000 euros [$105,000], we found later we had to pay [for her to wear it]. We give them dresses, we make the dresses, but we don’t pay.”

Although she ended up wearing Elie Saab (a downgrade from Chanel if you ask me) Lagerfeld could not resist but throw some shade. “She could keep the dress because of the size,” Lagerfeld said (LOOOOOOL). “It’s couture. It’s perfect for her.” He later added, “A genius actress, but cheapness also, no?” #BURN.

After reports started circling around claiming Meryl wanted to be paid to wear Chanel, a  representative from her team quickly disputed Mr. Lagerfeld’s claims to The Hollywood Reporter saying that it is against Ms. Streep’s ethics to take payment for wearing a designer’s gown.

Mr. Lagerfeld and Chanel apologised, with Mr. Lagerfeld explaining that he “misunderstood that Ms. Streep may have chosen another designer due to remuneration, which Ms. Streep’s team has confirmed is not the case.”

But Meryl Streep was clearly still dissatisfied with the apology and released her own statement accusing Karl of not only defaming her and her stylist but also Elie Saab, the Lebanese designer she chose to wear.

“Mr. Lagerfeld’s generic ‘statement’ of regret for this ‘controversy’ was not an apology. He lied, they printed the lie, and I am still waiting,” Meryl said, referring also to Women’s Wear Daily’s decision to publish Mr. Lagerfeld’s original accusation.

She accused the designer of taking attention away from her record-breaking 20th nomination. “I do not take this lightly,” she said.

Oh wait, did I mention that she suffered a wardrobe malfunction in her Elie Saab gown on the Oscars red carpet following her row with Karl? Lols… the fashion Gods have answered Karl’s prayers. Bet she wishes she wore Chanel, now!

My conclusion: Meryl needs to relax. I am team Karl. duh.
